With a busy summer with my dissertation as well as other things I haven't been able to keep this post updated.
With my metal band I've given them some extensive feedback on 2 of the songs. I was quite honest with them and gave constructive feedback both good and bad. The feedback will be present in my final appendix.
It mainly involved a number of tuning problems i had with the band as well as a few little things like adding a keyboard player to their band to add a little more dynamic.
I'm very pleased to see that they took my feedback seriously and changed a few things for the better. For example Fools Gold sounded like 3 different songs stuck together and was very much lacking in structure. With a little guidance it's now a song i'm very excited to record and the band enjoy playing it a lot more.
I tried to not be too rude with my feedback but i feel it came a cross a little, which obviously was not my intention and i explained that to them at a rehearsel.
We are recording in approximately 3 weeks from now during the half term break and will be focusing on getting most of the recording done in one week.
My other artist is patiently awaiting dates booked for when we can record, I'm confident with his songs as well as his committment and will be getting him into record soon after the first band.

Meet and Greet
20/06/10
Met my symphonic metal band today at a battle of the bands they are playing in.
Great bunch of guys who are all really talented. The singer is a classically trained oprah singer and is pitch perfect. I'm really looking forward to working with her voice and the band in the studios to get the most i can out of it. I was a little worried after hearing a few recordings that her voice may not be as powerful as i had hoped but luckily i was proven wrong.
Listened to one of the songs they wanted me to record and already came up with some ideas, these i'll discuss in detail with the band when i go to a rehearsel in the next few weeks.I Was oncerned of the lack of 'symphony' in the band as the orchestral part was generally just the singers classical voice. This i hope to bring into the recordings, hopefully avoiding MIDI where possible and finding some competent string players to create that 'Epic' sound found in most symphony metal bands. I.E Nightwish or Dream Theatre. Whilst MIDI is viable i feel it adds a layer of tack to some performances and is not for me if it can be avoided.
My next steps with the band are to get to some rehearsel time with them and listen to all the songs they want recorded. I'll probably record these so i can listen to them anytime i please and get back to them within a few days on any feedback i have ready for the recording stage.
I also need to work out timetabling the band in. All 5 of the band have very different work schedules which may cause some problems.
I'm hoping the band and the university centre can be available at decent times early in the first semester. although this maybe reliant on the singer and drummers half terms as they are both teachers.
Hopefully i will be meeting my other act sometime next week, he is currently in Glastonbury for the festival but has assured me he has plenty of music ready to lay to tape for me to listen to and chose. After hearing his song writing i'm confident i can get some great music from this guy.

Early Pre Production
This journal is to both help me with my final write up as well as offer an extra element to the production with an account of everything that has been done and when it was done.
Thursday 17th June
Contacted a few bands regarding some free recording time and whittled it down to 2 who are interested. One is an orchestral metal band with a fantastic singer and the other is a laid back solo acoustic pop type.
They are both on completely different wave lengths and both at a level that i think makes them unique and talented.
Both acts have a little studio experience, which is useful, and both acts really need a little guidance when it comes to laying their ideas to tape.
I will work as both their producer and engineer and hopefully offer some creative guidance from previous experience to get a great piece for all parties involved.
